Martin Luther
1483-1546
Luther is known as the instigator of the Protestant Reformation. He began this protest by posting his Ninety-Five Theses on the church door at Wittenberg in 1517. Ultimately, his movement had a far-reaching impact on the entire world. Luther was also a prolific hymn writer in his day. His goal was to write hymns and put them to music that could easily be sung by the common people. His method and musical style did indeed encourage congregational singing.
