1. Awake, Thou soul’s first inspiration; Let watchmen stand before the temple door! With constant zeal and firm devotion, Against the enemy they do implore. Their pealing calls throughout the world resound; Salvation, Lord, in Thee alone is found.
2. Is thus the pious flame extinguished, The flame of faith divine and fervent love? Who’ll call the souls unto the Master, And lead them to the cross and Lord above? Where is the Spirit’s witness in this day? Denying self, the Lord we should obey.
3. O, that Thy fire were brightly burning And all with faith and love might be inspired! If all this world were for Thee yearning, For in Thy blood salvation is acquired! O, Lord, Thou King, and Saviour, hear our plea And grant our wish and speak, “So shall it be!”
4. The promise of true pastors given; Hearts like Thine own do Thou in them instill. Thy holy Word was never broken; We know that Thou this promise wilt fulfill, The enemies before Thy hand shall fall; Thou art forever King and Lord of all.
Special thanks to the Apostolic Christians who diligently labored to keep their rich musical heritage alive when most other denominations forsook it in the challenging battle of changing cultures. Thanks be to those souls who labored to write and compose this treasure of praise, many now only known to GOD!
