Carl Heinrich von Bogatzky
1690-1774
As a young man, Bogatzky prepared for military service under the direction of his father who was an esteemed Lieutenant-Colonel in the Austrian service. During a long illness, Carl became convicted that GOD had other work for him to do. At age 23, he left the military and began to study law, and eventually theology. His father disowned him. Carl's rejection by his father for his refusal to enter the military, combined with the death of his mother attributed to failed health. He then devoted himself to religious writings. What he considered his most important publication was his Meditation and Prayers on the New Testament and True Conversion. His best-known work, however, is The Golden Treasury, a collection of religious writings and poems, which is still being sold as a devotional as of this writing. In all, he composed over 400 hymns.
