Scheffler was born in Breslau, Silesia, a part of Germany. Also, known by the pseudonym, Angelus Silesius, Scheffler wrote many hymns while in the Breslau monastery in the latter years of his life. As of this writing, 25 of his hymns are still in common use, including four in the Zion's Harp.
